Win One for God: A Pope Rally

February 18,2015

Last Dec. 12, 2014, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, close to 50 SSC college students, accompanied by Sir Rem Santos and Ms. Jing Calsado of the Theology Dept. braved this rally on a Friday when most Christmas parties  are scheduled,  in Araneta Coliseum,Cubao, QC, from 3-7pm. Thanks to Ms. Becky, dean of SAO for arranging our ride and merienda and Sr. Isabel of the Campus Ministry who gave us Benedictine medals for the journey.

This event was a preparation for the historic visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines, sponsored by the Episcopal Commission on Youth endorsed by The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines under Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas.

The event opened with a most meaningful celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided by CBCP President, Arch. Socrates Villegas, D.D.  It featured inspiring testimonies from the youth; after all, the most effective evangelizers of the youth are the youth themselves. Listening to the songs and sharing of their favorite artists in the entertainment world, they were seen in a new light; same struggles they go through but celebrating their faith in the Lord just the same.

The rally brought home the message of how deeply God knows us, how he lovingly embraces us and how he unconditionally loves us through the person of Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ in the world.

Our students highly appreciated the event because they were joined by students from both private and public schools within the vicinity of Metro Manila and even nearby provinces. They gamely cheered and screamed at the sight of their idols. Worth mentioning was Chris Tiu’s “pabaon” to the audience: Study well, obey your parents and pray much.”

Several students upon arriving in St. Scho thanked me for the wonderful opportunity and asked if it could win one seat for the coming of the Pope,I said:’ maybe? But what’s important is that we’ve won 50 for God on that day and they were just as excited to Win, not just One for God!
