Students Come Together Against Campus Violence
Around 110 students from the South Manila Education Consortium-Student Affairs Committee gathered last November 24, 2014, in the Augusto-Rosario Gonzales Theater of the DLS- College of St Benilde for a half day forum on issues on campus violence. This came about due to cases of deaths caused by fraternity hazing and the increase in drug related reports.
The half-day forum focused on identifying the different issues of students related to campus violence, finding alternative ways to combat campus violence, and providing opportunities for dialogue and solidarity among member schools of the SMEC.
Facilitated by Dr Lucia Pavia Ticzon of DLS-CSB, the forum used the Open Space Technology where campus issues were identified and students formed groups to discuss the issues. Students were free to move from one issue group to another. Ways to respond to the issues were presented as the students formed circles of issues. At the end of the forum, covenants to combat campus violence were drafted by each group. The draft covenants were submitted to the SMEC Student Affairs Committee for further evaluation and implementation.
Eight college students with Dean Rebecca Padilla-Marquez composed the St. Scholastica’s College group. The student participants were Francesca Medina, Wilhemae Go, Juan Emile Bagtas, Sarbjit Kaur, Ma. Crissa Janna Villanueva, Priangela Anne De Leon, Iandien Palmero and Rosevell Formanes.
