More than 150 Senior High School and College students, along with the OSB Sisters, faculty and staff warmly welcomed the lumads from different parts of the country who were part of the Manilakbayan protest march last August 31, 2017. The SSC group lined up along Taft Avenue near P. Ocampo and Estrada Streets as early as 10:00am, ready with bottles of water, bread, candies and biscuits to give to the more than 2000 lumad marchers. The lumads arrived at around 10:30am.
As soon as the lumad leaders reached Taft Avenue, the SSC group, led by its School President, Sr. Mary Frances Dizon, OSB and the Superior of the Manila Community, Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB, welcomed the lumads with warm embraces and strong handshakes. Emotions were high as words of solidarity and support were exchanged with the lumads. As the lumads proceeded with their march, water and food were distributed to the marchers.
The lumads are in Manila until the end of September to raise their issues of repression and abuse to the government.
