SSC School of Music (Voice Department) presents “Ana Maria” the Zarzuela

March 25,2015

The Voice Department of the College of Music premiered “Ana Maria”, a well-known comic Philippine zarzuela. Popular to audiences in the 1920’s, “Ana Maria” was a collaborative work of Filipino composer and national artist Maestro Antonio Molina and playwright Severino Reyes, also known as Lola Basyang.  “Ana Maria” revolves around the marriage of a husband and wife as put to test by the evils of “sabong” or cockfighting.

Held last February 23, 2015, at the Sr. Kuniberta Strathmann Hall, music majors, as well as students from other courses, faculty, parents, friends and other guests came to watch the performance.

The female protagonist role, nicknamed as “Anang”, was played by Kimberly Galicia (2pm show) and Jobeth Rozul (4pm show), while the lead character’s husband, Timo, was portrayed by Lorenz Lapresca. Anang’s best friend, Doray, was brought to life by Bernadeth Sabandal (2pm) and Nicole Pugeda (4pm). Pedro, Doray’s husband, was played by Jonathan Gozos. Isaac Iglesias portrayed Menggoy, the funny and quirky servant of Pedro. The zarzuela was directed by Prof. Jenny Logico-Cruz while live music was provided by collaborating pianist Ms. Judy Tan. “Ana Maria” was a successful show.
