SSC Manila JHS Glee Club joins Musikapella ‘15

December 9,2015

“That in all things, God may be glorified!” – that was the signature tagline being repeated by the members of the St. Scholastica’s (SSC) Manila Junior High School (JHS) Glee Club during their competition at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Theatre last November 21. This year proved to be a transition year for the chorale due to the many changes it has felt – from the group’s sound quality and vocal technique, to the commissioning of their new stylish light blue gowns, down to the passing of the conductor’s baton to Dr. Carl Elmore Santiago Facto. With all these, it definitely was uncalled for that the group would rush into battle right away, yet, the girls still decided to zealously grace the competitive stage of the AFP multi-purpose theatre, the official venue for University of the Philippnes (UP) Economics’ Society’s annual chorale competition — Musikapella. The St. Scholastica’s Manila High School Glee Club is not a stranger to this competition, having entered this contest numerous times before, the last time being two years ago at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City.

The group sang two songs, the contest and the choice piece. The contest piece for this year, selected to complement the theme of the event “A Tribute to Filipino Folk”, was “Ang Binhi” arranged by Raoul Carlo F. Angangco. Meanwhile, the group’s choice piece was “Saging Tundan” which was exclusively arranged by John August Pamintuan. Top choirs from all over Metro Manila including Miriam College, Ateneo de Manila High School (the defending champions), St. Paul’s College Pasig, Ramon Magsaysay High School, and Assumption College, just to name a few, vied for the title.

In the end, the Glee Club bagged the special award “Most Liked Sulyap Video” from the Sulyap Video Contest which is designed to promote Musikapella and the school through the creation of a Dubsmash video that was uploaded in Facebook in order for people to “like” it. Moreover, they ranked fourth out of the eleven schools that competed, thus completing this year’s competition season, with a huge wave of good reviews and commendations from their mentors. The Glee Club’s next performance will be on December 17, during the Simbang Gabi at the SSC Chapel.
