SHLRM at Whiskey Live Manila

October 27,2018

Last October 8, 2018 the students from the School of Hotel, Leisure, and Restaurant Management had the opportunity to take part in the biggest international Whisky Event in the world. The top two students that will be chosen in this seminar will be competing in the Whisky Live Manila. This event will allow guests to try over 131 top notch different types of whisky, scotch, bourbons, and blends from all over the world. It offers unlimited whisky tasting and connect with business people who share the same love and passion for whisky like you.

Mr. Jorge Joseph from the Philippine Wine Merchants discussed the history of Whisky, along with a brief discussion about the products that they are offering. In this seminar, the students will be taught about the basics of mixing cocktails, using the whisky as the base spirit. Mr. Kalel Demetrio, also known as a Master Bartender, explained all of the tools that will be used for mixing and how to properly use it.

For the first phase of choosing the participant, the students will be taking a written examination about the knowledge that they have acquired during the seminar. The top 11 students that had a high score in the written exam had to face an oral examination first where in the mentors had to ask question until there were only 5 students left. After undergoing the oral examination, the top 5 students that will be competing for the last & final phase were Kea Bayaras, Priyanka Hariramani, Allea Rivera, Larren Samson, and Ana Sophia Tamodra.

In order to choose the top two that will be representing St. Scholastica’s College, the five students will have to mix a drink one by one. They had to show of their skills in mixing and being able to communicate with the audience by explaining the drink that she is doing. After the students have shown off their skills and have proven why they deserve to compete in the biggest international whisky event in the world, the mentors were given a few minutes to deliberate about the two chosen students.

The top two students that will be representing St. Scholastica’s College and experiencing the mentorship program for the Whisky Live Manila will be Allea Rivera (1st year) and Priyanka Hariramani (4th year). Ms. Priyanka Hariramani will be mentored by Mr. Auie Benisano while Allea Rivera will be mentored by Mr. Kalel Demetrio. Along with the selected universities and brands, they will be competing in a live cocktail mixing competition at the Shangri-La at the Fort in Bonifacio Global City on November 9-10, 2018.
