Grade School Faculty Conducts Outreach Activity
In keeping with the school’s thrust of social concern and involvement, the Grade School Faculty headed by its Faculty Club officers initiated an outreach activity in support of the Grade School Outreach Program called “Yakap Eskwela”.
Last May 16, 2015, the Faculty Club representatives, with the help of SSC NSTP Facilitator Ms. Gale Arrosa, visited for the first time the Play and Learn Community Center in Purok 13, Brgy. South Daang Hari, Taguig City. According to Ms. Arrosa, the Play and Learn Community Center was claimed as a pilot area for a community school by the Social Action Center in 1995. At that time, the community school was adopted by the Grade School Unit under Mrs. Florina F. Castillo’s term as principal. The teachers easily recognized the Center’s chairs and tables that had been used by SSC’s students in the lower grades.
The Faculty Club brought school supplies like notebooks, pad paper, pencils, erasers, and some educational toys during the first visit. The Faculty Club also found out that the Center needed story and picture books for children. After the initial visit, the Faculty Club officers designated tasks among the teachers in preparation for the actual outreach, assigning committees for the feeding activity, the repainting of Center’s furniture, and the storytelling session.
After the careful planning, preparation, and asking for donations, the Grade School Faculty Club officers conducted Yakap Eskwela last May 23, 2015 at the Play and Learn Community Center. The teachers bought and prepared the ingredients for the sopas, puto, and gulaman for the children and their parents as well. While the storytelling and fun games were going on, volunteer teachers, parents, and students worked hand in hand in repainting the Center’s chairs, tables, and boards. The children enjoyed the food served to them with love and utmost care. They were very excited to receive candies, coloring books, and princess’s crowns as prizes in their fun games. At the end of the outreach activity, the children were given school supplies and books.
Indeed, Benedictines are called to live a life in community by responding to the needs of others. With the help and support of the Grade School Unit, SSC’s Outreach Program, and the Play and Learn Community Center, everything was made possible. Through a school atmosphere of ORA et LABORA, the Grade School Faculty aims to continue outreach activities in the future, serving others to attain the final goal – Christ.
