COGNATE in WOMEN’S STUDIES
[ENDORSED BY CHED APRIL 8, 2013]
Program Description
The commitments and thrusts of the Higher Education Gender and Development Accord executed by public and private Higher Education Institutions in October 2011, aimed at mainstreaming Gender in colleges and universities all over the country, are an offshoot of the increased awareness of the need to understand and address women issues. In line with this and to pursue the deeper objectives of the Magna Carta for Women (RA 9710), the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act (RA 7877) and the Anti-Violence against Women and their Children (RA 9262), among other related laws, the Cognate Program on Women’s Studies of St. Scholastica’s College is designed for interested advocates on gender and development. Following from the recognition of women and the women’s movement as major forces in forging a humane and ecologically sound future in the third millennium, this program considers the women’s perspective a vital element in the education process. It stresses the interplay of social categories of gender, class, and ethnicity in the various events and realities experienced and studied.
This certificate program consists of six (6) subjects and, if desired, the eighteen (18) units can be credited towards a Master of Arts in Humanities, major in Women’s Studies.
Program Objectives
At the end of the Cognate Program, the students will be able to:
- Become more conscious of and deepen their understanding of the women question;
- Gain a new perspective relevant to their life as well as to the efforts of women and men to improve their lives;
- Develop gender sensitivity and a gender-free perspective in the study and creation of various print and non-print materials;
- Enhance skills in facilitation, decision-making and leadership; and
- Become effective advocates of women’s rights.
