2014 Misa ng Bayan
For many years it was the Grade School Department which had taken charge of the Misa ng Bayan even before it was made an institutional activity. This year the High School Department took the challenge. The Misa ng Bayan is a lot different from the ordinary mass. It has many sung parts and the readers had to make “mano” to the priest before going to the lectern. The priest blesses with a big crucifix held aloft and many other things.
We chose our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Joselito Buenafe as the presider because he had an experience of it last year. The mass began with a dance by Grade School students to the singing of “Ang Puso Ko’y Nagpupuri.” A girl placed lei of flowers around the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the lighting of the Easter candle, the heads of the units, moderators of the Filipino Department of each unit, heads of other offices came up the stage to light the 12 candles surrounding the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Everybody was garbed in the national attire from all regions of the country, in varieties of colors and designs. It must have been beautiful to look at from the vantage point of the stage so Fr. Jojo had expressed his admiration. Even the backdrop, the decoration and the seat of the priest and acolytes were in local design. Fr. Jojo, in his homily encouraged the young people to take pride in our language and culture.
The singing was quite weak even if pamphlets of the Misa ng Bayan was made available. This means we need to practice some more if we want a more lively and empowering celebration next year.
