Program Description

The Master of Music in Music Education is a two-year course of study designed to provide students with a broader perspective/knowledge of the various skills and teaching strategies in music.  Music education is a legacy of St. Scholastica’s College (SSC) to education in the Philippines. SSC School of Music is the first music school in the country, which provided formal music education to both young and adults. It was founded in 1907 by Sr. Baptista Battig, OSB, a missionary Benedictine nun from Tutzing, Germany who was a concert pianist before her convent days and started developing the music talents of Filipinos by giving piano lessons using a second hand piano. While sustaining a tradition of excellence in performance, SSC’s School of Music has developed a second emphasis in the field of classroom teaching. Hence, the undergraduate program of the school, Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a principal instrument (piano, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, double bass, percussion, flute, clarinet or other wind instruments), prepares the students to become competent classroom music teachers of K-12, solo and collaborative performers of their principal instrument and teachers of the same instrument. Graduates in music education are currently employed in known schools in the country and abroad as faculty members and as administrators for music programs.

SSC recognizes the need to provide more opportunities for professional growth in the field of music.  Thus, SSC offers a graduate program in music education to update music teachers with the latest trends in education, innovative teaching strategies, materials and technology as a tool for teaching, as well as further develop their skills in teaching and administration.  Research is an important component of the course to keep the students knowledgeable about studies made and to conduct their own researches in music.

This expansion in trust is paralleled by a remarkable growth in its library holdings through continuous acquisition of new books, scores, CDs, videos and other materials and donations of library collections from well-known local and international artists.  The School of Music’s existing network of music preparatory programs, performance groups, current technological equipment, among others, all stand ready  to serve the laboratory phases of the curricula on the graduate level.  A recipient of the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) “2013-2014 Center of Excellence” award and with its outstanding faculty, SSC’s School of Music is in a position to offer a graduate program in Music Education in response to requests made by numerous individuals and alumnae who desire to pursue postgraduate studies in music.  With this graduate program, SSC can make a significant contribution to the musical life and development of the country.

Program Objectives

At the end of the degree program, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate advanced competencies in music education to teach all types of learners which include Grade School, High School, and Tertiary levels;
2. Be knowledgeable and skilled in performance, music theory and analysis, history and literature, conducting and research;
3. Exhibit graduate-level perspectives on contemporary issues and problems in music education like curriculum development, teaching methodology, innovations, assessment and evaluation, multidisciplinary concepts and program management; and
4. Acquire the necessary musical knowledge and skills, imbued with Filipino, Christian and Benedictine values to become leaders in music education capable of awakening cultural and social values among the Filipino people.
