Associate
Professor Angelina Gutierrez,
research paper presenter and
chair at panel sessions during
the International Peace Research
International Conference 2010 at
the Scholastican
faculty Professor Dr. Angelina
Gutierrez presented her research
paper at the peace education
commission panel session
entitled “Transformative
Education for Justice,
Sustainability and Peace, during
the International Peace Research
Association Conference last July
6-10, 2010 that was held at the
University of Sydney, NSW,
Australia. In her
research paper entitled “Option
for the poor: a path of
solidarity in communicating
peace education” Dr. A.
Gutierrez highlighted how the
‘preferential option for the
poor’ paradigm of faith-based
educational institutes in the
Philippines could contribute to
the common good in order to
transform structures of
inequities towards the promotion
of human development and peace.
The theme of
the conference was
“Communicating Peace”. During
the intensive 5-day conference,
over 300 peace theorists,
scholars, educators,
journalists, activists and
practitioners from all the
continents collaborated and
addressed the current global
conflicts. It brought
together non-hierarchical
social, economic, ecological and
political networks who are
focused in building a common
humanity, and who stand in
tension with the dominant logic
of power, force and coercion. Aside from presenting her research paper, Dr. A. Gutierrez was invited to chair at the panel session entitled “Peace Education/Studies: Institutional, Curriculum & Professional Dimensions”. According to her, “The conference papers, conversations and agenda were engaging and inspiring. Indeed, the world’s problems can be solved with will, solidarity, creativity and rigorous commitment to the truth when communication is directed towards generating justice, compassion and stable peace (IPRA Secretary General, 2010). While communicating peace is a lifelong challenge, the conference provided rich resources, networks, empowerment and positive disposition in the global struggle against unjust systems, demonization and dehumanization.”
