SSC JHS conducts its first SciCom
For the first time in history, St. Scholastica’s College (SSC) Junior High School (JHS) Unit, as spearheaded by the Science Area held its own version of the Science Communication (SciCom) Effectiveness Competition last September 25, 2015. Joined by the selected candidates from each of the Grade 10 classes, the event became an avenue for the students to demonstrate how well-versed they are in Science-oriented issues.
As it is an extemporaneous speaking contest, the participants were asked to deliver a prepared speech on a specific topic assigned to them like If Insects were Made Part of the Food Menu, The Hyperloop, The Unseen Killers in Air, Resurrecting the Ancient Species and many more. Judges from many other different institutions were invited to help select the winners. “In this competition, I’ve seen how the Scholasticans have made a lot of difference between the highly technical and difficult version of science and the people-friendly version. Judging this contest was a highly intellectual and fun experience. All of them were winners for me,” said one of the judges, Mr. Laudencia.
The rest of the Grade 10 students of the JHS unit took part in this event by attentively witnessing and cheering for their classmates and raising questions during the question-and-answer portion. Overall, the competition promoted scientific awareness among the audience and showed everyone that Science can be made attractive by good communication skills.
