SSC Adopts the Lumad Bakwit School

March 16,2019

St. Scholastica’s College, Manila adopted the Lumad Bakwit School or the Lumad Evacuation School for one week, from October 12-18, 2018. More than 100 Manobos stayed in the Subiaco compound where classes and interaction with the Lumads where held. In the afternoons, lessons and sharing with the Lumads and by the Lumads were held in SSC, e.g. beading sessions, dance workshops, lessons in the mass communication studios, computer laboratories, HRM laboratory, and science laboratory and discussions on the situation of the Lumads.

The Welcome “Salubong” held on October 12, was a dramatic event as the Benedictine sisters and the Lumad leaders met symbolizing the solidarity of the school with the Lumads. This was followed by a forum in the Function Hall A where the Lumads shared their plight faced with the imposition of Martial law in Mindanao which resulted in the withdrawal of Lumad schools’ permit to operate, thus the “Bakwit Schools”, to allow the unhampered education of the Lumad children. The next day was highlighted by a Solidarity Night where the Lumad and SSC students presented different cultural numbers. On October 14, which was also the Indigenous People’s Sunday, the Lumads were invited to the Sunday mass in the SSC Chapel where the Lumads also shared their plight to the mass goers. The mass which was officiated by the Redemptorist priests were very touching especially when the mass goers blessed the Lumads and the Lumads blessed the mass goers. A solidarity breakfast and a program followed in the pergola where everyone sang and danced.

The highlight of the next day was the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between SSC and the ALCADEV schools. This signified the continued support and collaboration of SSC with the Manobo schools in Surigao del Sur which started in 2010.

The week ended with the Solidarity Night on October 17, 2018, where different youth groups from Manila performed various cultural numbers as well as read statements of support and solidarity with the Lumads.  A solidarity dinner followed in Subiaco.

The last day, Octoctober 18, 2018. was the send-off to the Bakwit School which was transferred to Sta. Mesa.
