Seminar-Workshop on Kodaly Methodology & Workshop on Indigenous Instruments

The Music Education Department sponsored two seminars and workshops this school year. The Seminar-Workshop on Kodaly Methodology had Ms. Cielito E. Mirandilla as the facilitator, and was held last November 24 and December 1, 2014, from 2:00-5:00 in the afternoon at the Seminar Room, St. Cecilia’s Building.  This was attended by third, fourth, and fifth year music education students. Ms. Mirandilla shared with them her expertise on Kodaly philosophy and methodology. There were musicianship activities where the students had solfege, part-singing, tonal memory, ear training, inner hearing, and vocal and instrumental improvisation.  There were games, rhythm chants, bodily movements, hand signs, and conducting exercises, with the intent to develop further their musical skills and competencies. It was another opportunity for the students to experience the Kodaly approach to classroom teaching which is a child developmental approach and gives equal opportunities for everyone to experience music in their lives.

The Workshop on Indigenous Instruments was facilitated by Ms. Renee Camu, an expert on Philippine music and on playing indigenous instruments.  This time, the music education students had hands-on experiences on playing instruments both from the northern and southern Philippines.  They played on bamboo instruments from the north, such as the tongatong, bungkaka, pateteg, jaw’s harp, and saggeypo. They made their own rhythmic patterns and improvised as an ensemble, creating different tone colors and inter-locking patterns. Each instrument had its own function and its own story to tell.  From the south, the students played on the kulintang ensemble called the palabunibunyan.  Each one had the chance to play the kulintang, a set of 8 graduated-sized gongs, the agong, gandingan, babandil, and the dabakan. The music and culture of the Maguindanaoans was brought to life because of the mysterious and haunting sound of the ensemble.

The two workshops allowed our students to harness and hone their skills in singing, playing instruments, creating, improvising, moving, conducting, performing, listening, and doing part-work. These are necessary skills and competencies which music teachers should possess.
