Roma S. Rodriguez, Economics Major, is the First Scholastican Chosen as One of the Ten Outstanding Economics Students (TOES)
Organized by the Philippine Economic Society (PES), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and the Junior Philippine Economics Society (JPES), the search for the Ten (10) Outstanding Economics Students (TOES) is undertaken every year “to give the highest recognition possible to the students who have been the movers and shakers of the academic walls and society having Economics as a primary tool”. According to the group, the objectives are 1) to encourage young economists to take an active role in the social and economic development goal of the country now and in the future; and 2) to highly and credibly give due recognition to the young economists who are and shall drive the country’s economic platform now and in the future.
The selection process for this year 2015 was recently completed and Ms. Roma Rodriguez was chosen as one of the Top Ten (10) Outstanding Economics Students. As its maiden participation, the St. Scholastica’s College fielded Ms. Roma Rodriguez as nominee to the search committee last November of 2014.
The nationwide selection process involves three (3) screening levels according to the guidelines:
1. Nomination at School Level
This involves the endorsement of the School/University through the Department Chair, School Dean or the President;
2. Selection of Regional Finalists (The Top 20 Students)
A Screening Committee is convened for the purpose of selecting the Top Twenty (20) students among the nominees through nomination review. Only the top twenty (20) from different regions shall be qualified to enter the final round.
3. Selection of National Awardees (Top 10 Students)
The top twenty (20) students shall be required to submit one essay on a certain topic and after evaluation and review of the essay, only ten (10) students shall be chosen. The final ten (10) students shall be required to go to the final interview at the JPES Excellence Night in which the panel of judges shall record their final scores and deliberate on the rankings of the ten.
Ms. Rodriguez is currently representing St. Scholastica’s College in another prestigious Business Leadership Program (BLP) of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AMCHAM). Selection of participants to this program was also done on a national scale. She is also a very active student leader on campus for which she has earned respect and admiration from her fellow Scholasticans. Roma graduated last March 24, 2015 in BSBA major in International Business Economics and Diplomacy (IBEAD), Magna Cum Laude, with Special Recognition in Written and Oral Comprehensive Examinations.
