featuring Duo Pianists Della Besa and Annie De Guzman
The St. Scholastica’s Music Alumni Association presented Della Gamboa Besa and Anamaria Gregorio De Guzman in a duo-piano concert at the SSC Music Board Room last Aug. 11, 2014.
The highly emotional reunion brought together the two veteran artists, who first met as students of the School of Music in the 1950s as well as fellow alumni and aficionados, who have witnessed and have been inspired by their musical partnership spanning more than half a century. In 1973, the tandem performed Francis Poulenc’s two-piano concerto for SSC’s annual St. Cecilia’s Concert. Della and Annie, as fondly called by friends, are credited with several debut performances in the Philippines of pieces in the duo-piano repertoire and for promoting Filipino music, which was either arranged or composed for them.
As a leader in civic causes, Annie served as an Executive Vice President of the Philippine Jaycees, and was the first lady of the organization’s Asia Pacific Senate. A dedicated cultural worker, Della served as Assistant Dean of the St. Scholastica’s College School of Music, Director of Musical Arts/Performing Arts Dept. of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and later as the Director of the International Bamboo Organ Festival of Las Piñas.
For their program last August, Della and Annie first interpreted solo works namely, Wild’s arrangement of Gerswhin’s Embracable You and Chopin’s E major Etude Op. 10 no. 3. On two pianos, they performed Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and memorable Ernani Cuenco songs Gaano Kita Kamahal and Bato sa Buhangin which elicited warm applause and even tears of joy from the audience.
Della at Annie, maraming maraming salamat sa lahat ng musikang ibinahagi ninyo sa amin sa mga dekadang nakaraan!
