I-HOTELEIERES First Attempt in Mixology Competition
Last February 17, 2018, St. Scholastica’s College Manila participated for the first time in Bacardi U-mix, a competition which was held at The Ruins in Poblacion, Makati. This is the culminating activity of the Bacardi University where students representing their university or college showcase their individual talents in concocting different cocktails specifically made by them.
There were 26 students bartenders who joined the competition, coming from 12 different participating Universities and Colleges which includes University of Santo Tomas, St. Scholastica’s College Manila, Lyceum of the Philippines Cavite, Colegio de Sta. Teresa de Avila, Dela Salle University Cavite, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, St. Louis University, Philippine Cultural College, and Manila Taytana College.
Bacardi U-mix Competition focuses on the “talking/interactive bartender” wherein students are challenged to make their own drink showcasing their interactive skills as they present their own concoction to their judges in no more than 5 minutes. The competition enhances the student bartender’s communication skills by telling their story behind the drink they made as they make their concoction.
The three lucky students represented St. Scholastica’s College Manila were Larren Ysabel Samson, Hearty Irigon, and Jeremiah Peruna. They are members of the Junior Restaurateurs and Hoteleires’ Association. Our student bartenders did a splendid job in showing off their skills and all the contestants did their best. While watching the competition itself one can really see the determination in them and that they were really passionate about what they do. Some people even did several tricks in their performances. The students were creative in their own way and the thought that they can make their own unique drink was impressive.
Despite being a first timer in this competition, and out of all the 26 students competing, Larren Ysabel Samson with her winning cocktail called “Twisted Rocky Road” won third place in this year’s Bacardi U-Mix competition. Not only did Larren make a beautiful drink that impressed the judges, she also showed them her bubbly personality and her ability to focus as she shared the inspiration behind her cocktail. Even though it was our first time to compete, it did not mean that were already excluded from getting a place. All it took were determination, concentration, and passion. The students representing St. Scholastica’s College Manila didn’t go down without a fight. Surely, you will see more from St. Scholastica’s College in next year’s Bacardi U-Mix Competition and hopefully, winning another place.
