An Inter-University Discussion Group held at St. Scholastica’s College, Manila: Inquiry of the Economic and Political College Guilds on the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA)

July 12,2014

Last 30th of June, Monday, The UP Economics Towards Consciousness, together with its partner organizations, Economics Organization- SSC, Political Economist Guild, UST AB Debate Parliament, PUP Junior, UPM University Student Council, PUP Economics Research Society, and UPM Debate Circle, held an Inter-University Discussion Group at St. Scholastica’s College, Manila in Kuniberta Assembly Hall. The primary concern of the said discussion is the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) recently signed by President Barack Obama and President Noynoy Aquino.

“The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) indicates the restrictions and the limitations of the use of agreed locations as regards to the Philippine Military facilities by the US Forces. It also includes the assistance to the AFP and US troop deployment in line with the VFA and MDT.”

The participants of the discussion group tackled the provisions of the EDCA, presented the arguments for and against the agreement and gathered insights and opinions regarding the issue. Every student on the said discussion was very enthusiastic in giving opinions as well as sentiments. Despite the eagerness of each student to represent their respective schools in voicing out their conflicting arguments, the discussion group went well and flowed in a very collegial manner.

An Inter-University Discussion Group like this not just creates awareness, thus defeating being apathetic on prominent issues, but also builds more social capital through interacting on the different schools with the same fields of their liking.

“As Scholasticans, sharing in the same goal of being a participatory citizen, addressing pressing problems or issues concerning the country, is a prime mission.”
