1st Holy Communion 2015

March 19,2015

First Holy Communion has become a tradition in our school. It is celebrated annually in the month of February, the month of our Patron Saint, St. Scholastica. It is considered one of the most important and solemn occasions here in the Grade School Unit of SSC. It is the first time that a Baptized Catholic Scholastican receives the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist – the Body and Blood of Christ.

Preparation for First Holy Communion in the Grade School Unit is incorporated in the Christian Doctrine curriculum for students in Grade 2. Likewise, new students who did not yet receive the Sacrament are encouraged to participate in the preparation and join the grade 2 students in receiving the First Holy Communion. Non-Catholics are likewise invited to participate in the preparation and the rituals if they so desire.

Along with the preparation of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, our First Communicants are also prepared for the Holy Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is celebrated two weeks before the day of their First Holy Communion.

Leading the preparation process is the Office of Campus Ministry together with the Grade 2 and Music teachers and the English and Reading teachers. Prayers, lessons in Christian Doctrine on the meaning of the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Communion Songs and Stories of Jesus, Mary and the Saints, are side by side taught with academic lessons during the preparation period.

Recognizing that the parents also play a vital role in the preparation of their daughters, the Grade School Unit requires all the parents to attend a meeting and a recollection. It is meant to make them aware of their role as parents in the sacramental life of their daughters.

Through the concerted efforts of  teachers, parents, the whole school community and, of course,  the children, the celebration of the First Holy Communion has always become a grace- filled, solemn, happy, joyful, and unforgettable experience that any Scholastican remembers in her Grade School life.

Starting next school year, the Sacrament of the First Holy Communion will be offered to the Gr. 3 students.
